Why Use Dogs to Teach Genetics

Dogs are a GREAT model for teaching genetics. Why dogs you ask? These are just some of the reasons:

  • Dogs share many gene-related disorders with people. Each breed is a closed reproductive population with distinct rates of heritable diseases, increasing the odds of finding disease-related loci.
  • Dogs co-evolved with us. Researchers have found many gene changes associated with domestication of dogs ALSO changed as humans began growing crops and living in stable communities.
  • How and where dogs originated has been hotly debated. Much of the evidence for different theories is based on evolutionary genetics.
  • Dogs have easy to score phenotypes that can be traced to specific genes and proteins.
